$84.7 million to power Malawi’s power | Maravi Post

Sandra Bloemenkamp - World Bank

BLANTYRE–The World Bank has bankrolled Malawi with $84.7 million–K12.7 billion–to power the country’s poor power system.

Part of the funds, said the bank’s country manager for Malawi, Sandra Bloemenkamp, will help to improve the capacity of ESCOM systems to transmit electricity using improved technology.

“The existing system is greatly strained and the frequency of both scheduled and unscheduled electricity supply interruptions is increasing, affecting businesses and households,” the local WB chief was quoted as saying in the Daily Times.

The funds will also be used to finance feasibility studies for possible new hydropower stations at different locations in Malawi.

Malawi’s power comes from hydro stations on Shire River, the longest river which flows out of Lake Malawi and splashes into Mozambique.–maravipost
