UK Rapper Lowkey announces retirement from music

After the heralded “Soundtrack To The Struggle” album and work with Immortal Technique, Lowkey went to Facebook to explain he’s leaving the music industry to focus on his studies.

UK rapper Lowkey has announced his decision to quit the music industry. In a statement on his Facebook fan page on the evening of Tuesday 18th April, the outspoken emcee told followers; “After many months of contemplation I have decided to step away from music and concentrate on my studies.” He thanked supporters and explained; “the ego is a destructive thing and I feel this business and these social networks in particular have a tendency to feed it in an unhealthy way.”

The South London-born rapper has achieved widespread infamy, not only through his music but through his political activism, and his staunch pro-Palestinian stance has lead many to view his lyrical content as controversial.

Gifted for being able to paint vivid images in succinct musical verses as well as exposing injustices in carefully constructed yet seamlessly flowing lyrics, Lowkey’s back catalogue includes the recently released, critically acclaimed album Soundtrack To The Struggle, which also featured Immortal Technique and Mavado.

His departure from the music industry very quickly spawned thousands of responses from fans, and although deactivating his page shortly after, Lowkey did offer a hint of a return to the music scene in his statement; “Maybe at some point I will get back into it again but at this stage I feel I should direct my energy in different, more helpful directions.” He signed off; “thank you for all those who have supported me over the years. See you on the other side people.”
