Blantyre Water Board staff resumes work

Workers at Blantyre Water Board-BWB have agreed to resume work after the Minister of Labour Honorable Eunice Makangala and Minister of Irrigation and Water Development Rich Muhea intervened on the strike.

The workers are demanding 30 percent salary increament which according to sources at the office was effected in 2009 but the management decided not give the workers.

According to our reporter who has been following the matter at the BWB head office in Blantyre the workers earlier told the two Ministers that they will resume their duties unless the Board’s Chief Executive Officer Mr Andrew Thawe and Financial Controller Mr Henry Bakuwa are removed from the Head office for mismanagement.

Meanwhile government and the striking staff have signed an agreement aimed at resolving the matter within a month and the Cabinet Miniters have promised to take the matter to State President Mrs Joyce Banda who is currently in Nigeria.

In his remarks Blantyre Water Board Trade Union President Mr James Monjeza said the wokers are happy that government has promised to address the employees demands.

The strike led to majority of Blantyre residents to spend some hours without water after the workers disconnected water while some residents were being sent back when they want to settle their water bills in BWB paying points.
