Information Minister, Kunkuyu speaks on govt’s stand on media sector

The government of Malawi is reorganizing its media sector to improve the flow of communication.

This was announced at a dinner that Minister of Information and civic education Moses Kunkuyu hosted for media owners and managers in Blantyre on Wednesday.

The government’s information sector, especially its state broadcaster MBC has been widely criticized.

Kunkuyu said the reforms reflect President Joyce Banda’s commitment to entrench and deepen democratic practices in Malawi.

Giving details, principal secretary for the Ministry of Information Anthony Livuza said the reforms include improvements of operations at the State House Press Office, the Central Office of Information, and establishment of Press offices in all ministries and government departments, and better handling of press releases.

Livuza added that a concerted effort will also be made for MPs to turn into law the draft bill on the Access to freedom of Information.

This announcement comes a day after 15 radio and Television licenses were awarded.

Malawi will now have up to 44 broadcasters but only two daily papers.
