US,JB celebrate 100 days in office

Congressmen and women from the Unites States of America have sent a message of goodwill to President Banda for registering what they call substantial achievements in her 100 days of leadership since assuming power on April 7 this year.

A group of 38 legislators have conveyed their message in a letter to President Banda.

They acknowledge Banda inherited a number of challenges from the Mutharika administration and has managed to make reformations and restored donor support for Malawi.

The congressmen cite President Banda’s commitment to democracy, reflected in strong support for eliminating previous Malawi government restrictions on important rights and freedoms.

The legislators applaud her stand to convince USAID to pledge more support for the country, particularly in the form of public-private sector partnership with a focus on food security and agriculture.

They also say Banda is getting the country’s financial situation improved to the point that the International Monetary Fund (IMF), previously snubbed by her predecessor, has now given a positive assessment on the direction the country is going through.

They have also commended the President for the “ work with the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), which has now lifted the suspension on investment in Malawi and approved more than $300 million, largely directed at rehabilitating the power sector.”

On the political front, they noted “Banda’s strong stance against Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, to the point of stating that he would not be welcome in Malawi if the African Union Summit was to be held here.”

The congress representatives also cite her particular focus on women, especially young women, by providing opportunities for them in the public and private sectors.

They have since given an assurance of continued support to her government in the days ahead.

“We realize it is still very early in your term and understand the immense challenges and obstacles in your path. But on this 100-day commemoration, we congratulate you on a wonderful first chapter and look forward to working closely with you and your government in the days ahead,” reads the letter.
