IMF affirms donors fulfilled pledges to Malawi

Representatives of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have affirmed that the donors have fulfilled pledges they made towards assisting the Malawi government on the current economic challenges.

This confirmation is contrary to assertions by economic commentators and members of the public that the donors are not committed to assisting the Joyce Banda administration in cushioning the poor from the effects of the devaluation of the Malawi Kwacha.

The decision by the People’s Party administration to devalue the Kwacha was in accordance to recommendations made by the IMF and the World Bank.

The IMF resident representative Ruby Randall insisted that most donors have fulfilled the pledges they made for the first quarter of the 2012 to 2013 fiscal year.

Speaking in an exclusive straight talk programme on Thursday Randall said so far, the development partners have pumped in 90 million dollars for the first quarter of the fiscal year.
