Mary Waya to lead Tanzania Taifa Queens in Singapore

Newly appointed Tanzania national netball team coach Mary Waya begins her new role when she guides her charges to Singapore for a six-nation tournament this month.

The retired Malawi Queens legendary attacker said that she was excited with the task and promised to take Taifa Queens to greater heights.

Waya, who recently sealed a one-year coaching deal with the Tanzania Amateur Netball Association (Chaneta), expressed satisfaction with the focus of her players ahead of the six-nation tournament in Singapore.

“The players are in great shape and determined to get the best from the tournament. We’ve an organised training programme in which we train thrice a day. We start very early in the morning break for few hours and resume in the afternoon. The last session is held in the evening,” said Malawi’s most celebrated and award winning netball player.

Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) general secretary Helene Mpinganjira said they were happy that Waya was making a mark in Tanzania.

“This means that our netball has produced fruits which others are enjoying,” she said.

Waya took over from a long serving coach, Mary Protas who led the Taifa Queens to second position during the Africa championship hosted in the country early this year.

Waya was then an assistant coach. The Malawi Queens retired shooter, who also had a stint with Malawi Under-21 and 20 sides, has been in Tanzania since last year conducting various clinics.
