Malawi slips to 114 on Fifa rankings

Free-falling coach-less Flames continue tumbling on Coca-Cola Fifa rankings and the latest statistics show that they are now on position 114 from 111.

On the continent, the Flames have now been pushed to position 34 out of 50 Africa teams.

After plummeting 10 places down the ladder in December Fifa rankings, the Flame had hoped to gain some points from an international friendly against South Africa’s Bafana only to be whacked 3-1 by the hosts.

This month they have bagged just 299 points.

The Flames poor performance last week climaxed with the firing of coach Kinnah Phiri and his entire executive of technical director Jack Chamangwana, assistant coach Young Chimodzi, team manager Stuart Mbolembole and team doctor Mathews Mangondo.

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) general secretary Suyzgo Nyirenda, who is usually optimistic in such circumstance, said he was not surprised with the new rankings for the Flames.

“The way things are it is obvious that the team has to drop on Fifa rankings. All is not well,” Nyirenda said yesterday.

Malawi is now sixth placed in Confederation of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) region.

Even Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Angola who just a year ago were way below Malawi, are now above the Flames.

Zambia are still Cosafa’s best at position five and 34 in the World and they are followed by Angola as second best at position 78 in the world and 19 in Africa.

South Africa , who are now third in cosafa, are on position 85 and 22rd in Africa.

Zimbabwe are now on position 102 on world rankings and they are fourth best in Cosafa at position 28.

Ivory Coast are still Africa’s best followed by Algeria on second position, Mali on third position and Ghana on fourth position.

African champions Zambia are fifth.

World Cup champions Spain are still the world’s best team followed by Germany, Argentina and Italy in that order.
