Malawi drug shortage slightly improving

Two months after doctors at Kamuzu central hospital raised the alarm over drug shortage; officials at the facility say the situation has now slightly improved.

Doctors at KCH wrote an open letter to President Joyce Banda towards the end of February, seeking her intervention on the drug situation in the country.

Health authorities also revealed that the Central Medical Stores Trust had run out 95 percent of drugs.

Last month, the government through the Central Medical Stores Trust awarded contracts to drug firms to supply it with various medical supplies.

Development partners also move in quickly to help the country with huge consignments of drugs, following the doctors’ alarm.

Speaking to the media KCH director Noor Alide said their current supply will see them through for the next two months.

He adds that with the monthly government funding they are able to replenish the drugs in-order to fill the gap created due to the shortage.
