Malawi national football coaches challenged to prove they deserve contracts

Malawi national team coaches Eddington Ng’onamo and his two assistants Ernest Mtawali and Patrick Mabedi’s future will depend on their performance in the three months they will be in charge of the Flames.

Football Association of Malawi(Fam)president Walter Nyamilandu has said the coaches will be on probation in the three assignments they will be in charge of the team in World Cup qualifiers against Namibia and Kenya.

Nyamilandu challenged the trio to prove they deserve contracts at the end of the three months.

“The three games are like a test for the coaches. It’s like they are on probation and after that we will be able to offer them contracts if they prove they are worth it,” Nyamilandu said.

“Our expectation is that the new faces we have brought will be able to bring smiles on faces of Malawians so that we can go back to winning ways. We want to excel in the World Cup we also want to prepare for the forthcoming Africa cup of Nations qualifiers with the first fixture in November.”

He said he was confident they would succeed.

“They are highly motivated. They want to prove to Malawians that after the Kinnah (Phiri) regime we still have good coaches in Malawi. The two assistants have played football at high level. The experience they will bring will help Eddington Ng’onamo who is also experienced and intelligent and has done very well at Bullets,” he said.

Ng’onamo thanked Fam for offering him a chance to coach the Flames and said he was ready for the challenge.

“Firstly, I have to thank Fam president and his executive for appointing me to be Flames coach. It’s a big challenge for me. I have to thank the former coach Kinnah Phiri for his contribution.

“He groomed most of these players and managed to take the national team to the Afcon finals after 25 years. We will continue from where he stopped,” he said.

On the targets set by Fam for the coaches to make sure they do well in the three games they will be in charge, Ng’onamo was philosophical.

“In the world there is no coach who prepares his team to lose in a game. This applies to us as well. We are preparing to win the three games starting with the one against Namibia,” he said.

He, however, pleaded for support from both Fam and the football fraternity.
