Professor Peter Mutharika has won the presidential seat for the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) during the party’s convention held at the Blantyre’s Comesa hall from 17 to 19 April. Mutharika who has since been the acting DPP president following the death of his brother Bingu, beat his position rival Chimunthu Banda- speaker of the National Assembly by 1,266 against 73. This means Mutharika will lead DPP in 2014 tripartite elections.

  1. From the start in 2011 – 2012 this convention was not purposed to elect but to endorse. It is this aspect in principles of democracy that led to dismissal of Joyce Banda, then Vice President, from DPP and the later emergence of the now PP (without the D). Purpose expresses the intent. DPP convention has endorsed Professor Peter Mutharika. Hon Chimunthu Banda was just statued to depict an election. Not strange. It is fallacious to ascribe Hon Chimunthu Banda to have lost in an election per se. I salute the DPP first ever Convention held and well organised quota system minded electoral process for the endorsement
