The Malawi government has signed a US$667.2 million coal-fired plant deal with China Gezhouba Group Company (CGGC). The deal will see CGGC designing and constructing a coal-fired power plant (Thermal plant) at Kamwamba in Neno.
Minister of Energy, Ibrahim Matola, who led a Malawi delegation to China to facilitate the deal, said once complete, the power deal will provide for up to 1,000 MW with 300 MW proposed for the first phase.
Matola explained that the plant will use about 400,000 tonnes of coal annually from Moatize in Mozambique. – By Caroline Kandiero
