President Joyce Banda today led in the laying of wreaths at Zolozolo cemetry in Mzuzu in memory of July 20 victims.

They were killed during the July 20, 2011 anti-government demonstrations where at least 20 unarmed people were mowed down by trigger-happy police officers.

According to today’s Malawi News, thousands of Malawians took to the streets protesting the worsening political and economic situation during the reign of the late president Bingu wa Mutharika.

Heavily armed police officers used live ammunition to break the protests leading to the indiscriminate deaths in Karonga, Mzuzu, Lilongwe and Blantyre. Mzuzu recorded the highest number of deaths.
