QUESTIONS OVER PROCEEDS OF JET MONEY REMAIN

The mystery surrounding how the jet money was used remain despite the government claiming that the money was used for such other purposes as Peace-keeping in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

FaceofMalawi has established that the United Nations is bound to reimburse a member country that has used its money in a peace-keeping operation, something that the government of Malawi has not hinted to in its claims that a huge chunk of the proceeds from the jet sales was used for military operations.

According to the way the UN conducts its business, it is apparent that the money had to be reimbursed now had the jet-money really been put into the use of peace-keeping as the government claims. This has, therefore, raised doubts and speculations over the manner in which the money was used.

The usage of the jet money has been very much questioned after it was established that the money was not deposited in the government’s Account number 1 at the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) as the case had to be. This raised speculations and government rushed in to clear the air by claiming that the money had been used for peace-keeping operations in DRC, purchase of drugs and purchase of maize.
