Malawi govt purchases learning material worth K300m

Government says it has procured teaching and learning material worth over K 300 million to be distributed in all schools across the country.

Minister of Education Dr Lucius Kanyumba disclosed this in Dedza on Tuesday during a meeting with teachers in the district.

Dr Kanyumba said, “This aims at addressing resource constraints which have led to dwindling education standards in the country.”

He said the shortage of teaching and learning material is one of the major challenges most schools are facing in the country.

Dr Kanyumba said the challenge is compromising education standards among learners  in the country.

According to Dr Kanyumba, to address the challenge, government has procured the teaching and learning material worth over US$800,000.

Dr Kanyumba said desks, books, exercise books, pencils, pens and boards are some of the resources they have procured.

He said government will put strong measures to make sure that teachers should not sell the resources instead of benefit learners in schools.

The education minister also hinted that government has received additional  books worth over K700, 000 from the National Aids Commission.
