IMF, WORLD BANK DISTANCES ITSELF FROM ATUPELE’S REMARKS

Malawi’s development partners have distanced themselves from the remarks made by United Democratic Front (UDF) President Atupele Muluzi that budgetary support will only resume if there is regime change after the May 20 general elections.

The  UDF leader told a campaign rally in Mzuzu that representatives of the donors told him and his running mate Godfrey Chapola that they would only support the budget if there was change of government.

He said the two met representatives of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund and other developing partners last week.

However, the European Union head of delegation to Malawi Alexander Baum told the Local newspaper that the sentiments from Muluzi are not true.

He added that their support is based on macro-economic stability as assessed by the IMF and not based on politics.
