MUTHARIKA LEAVES FOR ZIMBABWE ON SATURDAY

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika is expected to leave the country on Saturday for Zimbabwe to attend the 34th Ordinary Summit Meeting of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Heads of State and Government.

The summit which will start from August 17-18 2014 is scheduled to take place at Elephant Hill Resort Hotel Centre in Victoria Falls.

This has been disclosed through a press statement from the Office of the President and Cabinet signed by Presidential Press Secretary.

During the summit, President Mutharika will present a report as outgoing Sadc Chairperson on the activities undertaken during the period under review as well as handover the Sadc Chairmanship to his Zimbabwean counterpart Robert Mugabe.

The Malawi’s Sadc Chairmanship was held under theme “Agriculture development and agro-industries: Key for Economic Growth and Poverty Eradication in the Sadc Region” focusing on the empowerment of women and the youth

Zimbabwe’s Sadc Chairmanship will be under the theme: “Sadc Strategy for Economic Transformation: Leveraging the Region’s Diverse Resources for Sustainable Economic and Social Development through Beneficiation and Value Addition.”

The trip to Zimbabwe comes barely a week after President Mutharika’s return to US where he attended a three day-African Leaders summit.
