Two Malawian mothers set out their plans for the future through irrigation

Georgina Wimtala and Dorothy Malizani are members of the Mwanankhuka Irrigation Project run by a group of small-scale farmers in Chanika village, Malawi.

They’ve sub-divided an area of dambo (wetland) into separate allotments, and produce a range of vegetables including cabbage, onions, tomato, and garlic at the site.

Dorothy says that she earned the equivalent of $10 US from the sale of vegetables recently, and used the money to hire labour to help her to plough her maize field. She also bought two chickens to rear.

Both women took part in farm training with Self Help Africa, and now want to diversify their farming activities so that they can also grow sweet potatoes and soya-beans, and also earn additional money as community-based seed producers.
