FaceofMalawi exclusively has it that the University of Malawi has finally agreed to implement a 400% fee hike in all its constituent Colleges.

Information that this online publication has indicates that from the new academic year that will fall in line with the new budget, the University will implement the 400% fee hike.

Under this, it is expected that all government sponsored students will be required to pay a minimum of MK275,000 from MK55,000 which they are paying right now. Parallel students will be paying MK940,000.

Reports further suggest that disunity amongst the students will see government have a free ride in implementing the hike that will have been opposed were it in the past University crop.

Some students are indicating that they will foot the bill while another group is not comfortable with the system.

The proposal to hike the University fees has been on the proposing table for far too long but had always met stiff opposition which has not been there this time around.

The decision to hike University fees has been contentious as it has heavily divided opinion with some looking at it unfairly while others welcoming it.

  2. I cry for Kamuzu Banda who understood poverty in Malawi. Now we have leaders who have never gone to the University of Malawi. They studied on scholarships and their parents never felt the pain of paying fees. Instead of subsidising cement and iron sheets, why not think of subsidising university education? Peter Mutharika you are not fit to lead Malawi. You are insensitive. Only children from rich families will study at the University now. Kamuzu please come back to help poor people in Malawi.

  3. Congratulations UNIMA and all the current students. this is a very welcome idea. Can I suggest that there should be a segregation between scholarship and selection to UNIMA. Only poor students from community day and district secondary schools should qualify for government scholarships and should be given loans to cover their contributions. children of middle class and rich parents should not be awarded government scholarships as is the case now. how can a student from Kamuzu academy, st andrews, etc whose parents were paying MK1,300,000 per term (3 terms = MK3,900,000) qualify for a government scholarship???????? this is how you can end quarter system. government scholarships should be awarded to the poor ONLY!!!!!!!!

  4. UNIVERSITY EDUCATION IS NOW FOR THE RICH FEW MALAWIANS. THE POOR DO NOT HAVE A CHANCY. THIS IS REALLY UNFAIR. ABALE TIZIGANIZILANA POCHITA ZINTHU.CHILUNGAMO PALIBE APA. OLEMERA AZINKA NDALEMELABE, OSAUKA AZINKA NDASAUKIRABE. A BOMA TIGANIZIRENI CHONDE TAPOTANANU.
