Law Student Found Dead In Swimming Pool at Lake of Stars Music Festival

A 21 year old Chancellor College law student was found dead in the swimming pool at Nkopola Lodge during the Lake of Stars Music Festival 2014 edition. According to Police reports, the young man identified as Ufulu Kanyongolo was found unconscious in the early hours of Saturday 27 September 2014. According to a statement released by Sunbird and the Lake of Stars organizers, the student received medical attention from on-site medics and the Mangochi District Health Officer before he was pronounced dead.

The police are still investigating the circumstances that led to the death of the student. Ufulu Kanyongolo was the son to prominent legal activists, Edge and Ngeyi Kanyongolo.

Lake of Stars Music Festival is a three-day international event held on the shores of Lake Malawi (Lake Niassa), the third largest fresh water lake in Africa. The name, Lake of Stars is derived from the romanticized title given to Lake Malawi by the explorer David Livingstone. The name also comes from the fishermen’s lights that shine on the horizon like stars. The festival has been held annually around September-October since 2004, in various locations on the shores of Lake Malawi. The event was founded by Will Jameson to raise money for Malawi’s developing economy whilst helping to promote Malawi as a tourist destination and expose Malawian artists to international crowds.
