CEAR TO RECRUIT 35 TRAINEE LOCOMOTIVE DRIVERS

Central East Africa Railway (CEAR) has embarked on an expansion drive with plans to recruit 35 trainee locomotive drivers.

CEAR Public Relations Officer Chisomo Mwamadi disclosed this in an interview with the State controlled radio [MBC 1].

In his speech, Mwamadi said the company had already bought two new locomotives this year and is expecting four more including 18 new passenger coaches.

“We are growing as a company and have bought two new locomotives this year and we are waiting for another four including 18 new passenger coaches and that needs a good number of drivers.

“We are looking for close to 35 trainee locomotive drivers. We have 26 locomotive drivers now who are not enough to since we work 24 hours on cargo and passenger trains”, he said.

He said the required applicants would undergo a 18 months training.

CEAR was awarded a concession to operate Malawi’s railway and started its operations in December, 1999.
