Malawi and Zambia have agreed to transfer prisoners between the two countries as one way of promoting security and bilateral relations.
Chief Commissioner of the Malawi Prisons Service, Kennedy Nkhoma signed the deal with his Zambian counterpart in Chipata- Zambia.
The deal was signed during the transfer of 15 Malawians convicted in Zambia on various offences.
Nkhoma applauded the two governments for making it possible for their respective prison services to undertake the exercise.
He said Malawi was committed to strengthening and improving the arrangement of prisoners’ exchange program.
However, Nkhoma observed that Malawi was unable to transfer Zambian prisoners serving their sentences in the country because authorities were still processing their sentence transfer documents.
Commissioner of Zambia Prison Services, Percy Chato said the transfer programme shows commitment by the two governments in realizing tenets of the agreement.
