TNM’s Pasavute service surpasses 20 million airtime advances in 6 months

Pasavute, which means “No worries” in Chichewa, allows subscribers of TNM to purchase airtime in advance and pay the face value of the airtime voucher at a later stage.

A subscriber can purchase one airtime voucher at a time and is charged a service fee per airtime voucher purchased. The service is available via the USSD and SMS channels provided by TNM, and both channels are free services to the customer.

Since the inception of the Pasavute service in mid-March 2014, Supa Pesa International Limited, in partnership with Net1 Mobile Solutions (N1MS), have serviced more than 20 million Advance Airtime requests for Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM). ‘Pasavute’ the Chichewa expression for ‘no worries’, allows eligible subscribers to borrow various denominations of airtime on the fly and pay it back later, when they next top up.

Over the last 30 days in excess of 200,000 TNM subscribers use the Pasavute service on a daily basis. This figure equates to almost 20% of the active user base utilising the service every day. The service is offered in both English & Chichewa ensuring that TNM subscribers can engage in their language of preference.

Subscribers are only offered Advance Airtime loans which are in accordance with their spending patterns thereby ensuring that they do not extend themselves financially. The Pasavute Service has achieved these major milestones, in only six months since launch.

“Achieving these phenomenal results in such a short timeframe, is resounding proof of the popularity of the service amongst TNM’s subscribers. Furthermore, continuous product optimisation has further enhanced the uptake amongst existing TNM Pasavute customers. This service has proved so popular, that currently an average of 28 loans have been taken per user and this figure is climbing daily”, says Harm Fourie, Managing Director of Supa Pesa International.

Philip Belamant, Managing Director of N1MS further shares, that “The overwhelming response to Pasavute from TNM’s 842,743 eligible subscribers is a resounding endorsement that this innovative solution responds directly to a problem faced by Malawians on a daily basis. Pasavute makes it possible for subscribers to stay connected when they need it the most, setting TNM apart as a network that takes care of its customers in their time of need.”

The service allows subscribers of TNM to purchase airtime in advance and pay the face value of the airtime voucher at a later stage. A subscriber can purchase one advance airtime voucher at a time and is charged a nominal service fee per airtime voucher purchased. Our unique and innovative pre-qualification and scoring engine evaluates whether or not a customer qualifies for the airtime advance service, and the commensurate voucher value for which they qualify. Subscribers are therefore able to borrow only what they can afford to repay.

Pasavute is available via the USSD and SMS channels provided by TNM, and both channels are free to the customer. The TNM subscriber is only charged a service fee when an advance airtime voucher is purchased.
