ZOMBA FLEA MARKET CHAIRPERSON ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED OBSTRUCTION OF DUTY BY ZCC

Chairperson for vendors at Zomba Flea Market Joseph Zuze has been arrested by Malawi Police for alleged obstruction of duty when city council officials wanted to relocate vendors plying their trade outside the market.

Sources gathered by FaceofMalawi indicate that Zomba City Council (ZCC) was performing a relocation exercise Monday morning when Zuze came out of the market and protested the move.

Zuze is alleged to have demanded the officials to first remove vendors who sell goods on behalf of Asians outside their shops before relocating others to the Flea Market,” said one of the eyewitnesses.

Investigations reveal that words were then exchanged between zuze and the officials who were accompanied by the police and who arrested him on the spot.

However members of the vendors committee are reluctant to have Zuze released on police bail and have opted for a court bail on Tuesday.

In recent developments vendors have argued of having limited space in Flea Markets, which inturn forces them to sell their merchandise outside the market or in the streets!

Recently the Peter Mutharika administration has launched a clean-up campaign in cities aiming to remove vendors from selling on the streets and keeping the city clean.

So far vendors in Lilongwe and Blantyre have already been relocated to their designated places.
