MUTHARIKA ON SUNDAY LEAD MALAWIANS IN REMEMBERING FALLEN HEROERS

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika on Sunday led Malawians to join the rest of the world in the commemoration of fallen heroes who lost their lives as they fought in the First and Second world Wars between 1914 to 1918 and 1939 to 1945.

Malawi’s Remembrance Sunday took place at the War Memorial Tower in Lilongwe.

This year’s commemoration was so significant in the history in the sense that s it marks 100 years since the First World War broke out on August 4, 1914 when Germany invaded Belgium.
During the invent, Mutharika laid his wreath at Lilongwe War Memorial Tower to pay homage to those fallen heroes.

Apart from Mutharika, some members of diplomatic corps, senior government officials and a living war veteran also laid their wreaths in respect of the war veterans.

Some of the notable people who attended the ceremony include; lady Her Excellency Madame Gertrude Mutharika, the Vice President Hon Saulos Klaus Chilima and wife, representatives of the common wealth ex-service, war veterans who fought in the two world wars, members of the Diplomatic corps, Chief Justice, Chief Secretary in the office of President and Cabinet, Mr Willy Samute.

The function was also graced by Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon Richard Msowoya, Ministers, leader of opposition and the President of Malawi Congress Party, Hon Dr.Lazarus Chakwera –MP, President of PETRA, Hon Kamuzu Chibambo, Parliamentarians, Mayor of Lilongwe City Council,people from all works of life and Malawians of good will.

On November 11 every year, Malawi joins the rest of the world in remembering those who died during world wars. The wars claimed over 17 million lives while leaving at least 20 million people wounded.
