12 Mzuzu University Students have been arrested for allegedly blocking the M1 road over unpaid allowances.
FaceofMalawi speaking to one student who opted for anonymity said the students were strike following misunderstandings with the College Management.
The student further revealed that administration had paid half of the upkeep which is K20, 000 and that students were demanding their pay as the semester is expected to end on 17th December.
The students demonstrated by blocking the road from Mzuzu city going to Karonga with burning tyres.
Confirming the development is Northern Region Police Publicist Sergeant Maurice Chapola who said: “So far we have arrested 12 students. They have been charged with the conduct likely to cause breach of peace. We are still investigating the matter and more arrest will be made.”
Some 5 vehicles and a number of people were stoned during the fracas, said Chapola.
However Mzuzu University Authorities could not be reached for commenting.
