The Malawi Police Service is mandated by the constitution to provide safety and security to all citizens regardless of one”s standing in society. MPS is also mandated to provide security in all planned demonstrations as stipulated in Police Act under part 9. MPS has learnt that the Civil Society Organisations (CSO”s) are intending to hold demonstrations in Zomba, Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Karonga.
Government“s position is that it will allow and facilitate for the CSO”s to hold peaceful demonstrations.
Therefore Police as at now are engaging CSO”s in discussions on how best the demonstrations can be done in order not to infringe people”s rights, endanger people”s lives and property. As a result of this MPS is assuring Government, CSO”s and all citizens that the MPS is ready and will provide maximum security. MPS is therefore warning those that would want to disrupt the peaceful demonstrations that they will be dealt with according to the law.
As at now whilst discussions are still on with the organisers (CSO”s leadership) we are appealing to them to cooperate with Police and provide relevant information pertaining to the demonstrations that will assist in tackling potential security threats that usually go with demonstrations.
MPS wishes therefore to appeal to those who are intending to take part in these planned demonstrations to be responsible, patriotic to government and Malawi as a nation and ensure that safety is achieved in collaboration with their police so that security is maintained.
Mrs. Rhoda Manjolo, SACP
Press and Public Relations Officer for The Inspector General of Police.
