Police in Mzimba have arrested 42 people for allegedly looting shops that were gutted by fire in Mzimba Market on Sunday.
The fire which is said to have originated from an Electricity pole and spread to a shop which was nearby, before it spread to other shops, destroyed goods worthy MK800 million.
Mzimba police spokesperson Gabriel Chiona confirmed of the development in an interview with the Press.
According to Chiona, among the arrested people are women who were caught red-handed with assorted items believed to have been stolen in the shops.
Mzimba Market Chairperson Emmanuel Ng’ambi confirmed of the development, saying a lot of goods were also looted during the fire in the shops.
“We have lost our goods during the fire. Unknown people were just coming in to break the shops and steal our goods before the owners arrived,” said Nyirenda.
The suspects are currently being kept at Mzimba Police Station and they will appear in court soon.
