Lilongwe Police are keeping in custody a Frank Bandu 43 years of age of Congolese nationality on suspicion that robbed a Chinese businessman K3 million by the use of firearms.
Confirming the development with FaceofMalawi Lilongwe Police Public Relations Officer Kingsley Dandaula said the suspect was spotted in Area 23 at a garage with a car that was allegedly used during the robbery in Area 4.
He said the public tipped off the police and the latter went to the garage where they apprehended Bandu and upon searching his vehicle, found firearms.
“We found him with pistol magazines and nine rounds of live ammunition,” said Dandaula. “We are still investigating to trace the firearms whose ammunition and magazine he possessed.”
He said Bandu’s vehicle, a VW registration number NU 2686, was linked to an armed robbery that occurred on 9 March 2015 in Lilongwe’s industrial site, Area 4, and that the Chinese businessman who was robbed on the day had identified it as the same car.
Bandu is expected to appear before court soon to answer charges of illegal possession of firearms and armed robbery when investigations have been completed, Dandaula said.
