Lilongwe’s Kamuzu College if Nursing Campus has been closed indefinitely following demonstrations on Wednesday afternoon whereby the student started to protest over not having been paid their meal allowances for three months.
Sources gathered by FaceofMalawi show that the students allowances dubbed ‘malswitch’ which as was hiked from K40,000 to K50,000 with effect from January this year has not yet been paid ever since it was implemented.
All we want is our money and its arrears because we suspect that members of the administration are embezzling it, otherwise why would other colleges have received their allowances and not us,” reasoned one student who further disclosed that the excuse given to them by the administration was lack of funding.
As the commotion went on this forced the University of Malawi (Unima) administration to take precautions measure and opted to indefinitely close the college.
According to one of the students, a communication from KCN management came late this afternoon.
“We have received communication from the administration to vacate the college premises by 6 pm today otherwise we will be forced to do so by the Police,” said the student.
By 5pm most students had not left the premises prompting Malawi Police Service to arrive and restore calmness at the campus.
