Blantyre City Mayor Counselor Noel Chalamanda has pleaded with people living in the outskirts of Nancholi in Blantyre to refrain from cultivating in upland areas to avoid future.
The mayor made the remarks just soon after donating relief items to flood victims in the area.
“The destruction caused by the heavy rains could have been avoided if people in the area were not cultivating in upland areas” he said.
Sources gathered by FaceofMalawi indicate that the donation was worth K3.4 million been made probable courtesy of Chinese Business Community practicing their trade in Blantyre.
“We saw it fit to help since some of the victims are our customers so it’s a way of giving back to them” said LIWU PING, Secretary General of Chinese Chambers of Commerce Blantyre.
According to Counselor Chalamanda the donation will also strengthen the diplomatic ties between Malawi and China. Over 4,000 families in Nancholi were affected by the heavy rains.
