Concerned commuters in the commercial capital Blantyre have appealed to the City Council to consider rehabilitating the Naperi Bridge soon amidst fears that it’s in battered condition and most likely to collapse soon.
According to commuters the bridge which acts as a gateway into the city of Blantyre for many residents such as: Chitawira, Naperi, Nkolokosa, Zingwangwa and Chilobwe and has since outlived its years of being useful.
The bridge is one of the oldest in the city and is in dire need of repair as it is slowly but surely deteriorating.
One of the commuters Samson Chikowa who resides near the area has attributed the problem to negligence.
“Had it been that this bridge was being monitored by the authorities, the case could have been different,” he said.
As of recently the heavy rains has damaged a substantial amount of bridges and roads in the country and without the intervention of authority the situation is just going to get worse.
