A 70 year old grandpa is in police custody for allegedly defiling two girls of ten years at Nkopo village, Chief Mbwananyambi’s area in Mangochi.
Machinga Police Officer-in-Charge, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Gideon Nahumu confirming of the incident with FaceofMalawi in an interview said the suspect has been identified as Hamison Dulao.
According to Nahumu, one of the girls sustained injuries in her private parts following the defilement.
He said the two girls were then referred to Nainunje Health Center at Kapoloma in Machinga for medical examination of sexually transmitted infections.
Dulao was arrested after one of the girls’ mother reported the matter to Nselema Police on Sunday.
He is expected to appear before court soon to answer defilement charges contrary to Section 138 Sub Section 1 of the Penal Code, according to Machinga Police.
District Aids Coordinator for Machinga, Ben Tohno condemned the incident, noting that defilement incidences were on the increase, and a recipe for transmission of the HIV.
Tohno then advised parents, guardians and other child protection structures to refer defilement and rape victims to health facilities to access Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP).
PEP is a type of ARV that is given to those that are exposed to untested blood, human sperms and other body fluids by accident.
Dulao and the two girls come from the same village of Nkopo in Mangochi, according to police reports.
