Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has disclosed that it will hold by-elections for Ward Councilor in four Wards of the country just after the passing of the 2015/16 national budget which is between June and July this year.
MEC Spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa disclosed this in an interview with the press, saying the calendar will be released soon.
“Yes we are bound to conduct elections in all wards that do not have councilors in the country by June this year and parties will be notified soon,” said Mwafulirwa.
Over four wards were left without councilors due to death with the recent being the death of Zomba City Mayor Joana Ntenje who was the only female mayor in all the four cities.
Some of the wards that are vacant are Nsikizi ward in Mangochi, Chibanja Ward in Mzuzu and Khwawa Ward in Karonga.
Recently MEC told the press that the body is failing to hold the by-elections in the said Wards as the body does not have money to carry out the exercise.
