The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has postponed the launch of by-elections meetings for the June 24 Local Government Elections due to financial woes.
This was disclosed in a Press Statement released on Wednesday signed by MEC Chief Elections Officer Willie Karonga, saying the delay is funding has forced the body to put on hold the launch.
The launch was scheduled for today Thursday 30, 2015.
“This decision has been reached at because of delayed funding for the by- elections from government. However, stakeholders should note that other preparatory activities for the by-elections will continue as planned.
“The Commission sincerely apologises to all stakeholders for the inconvenience this might cause and is assuring them that it is doing everything possible to ensure that the by-elections slated for June 23, 2015 are a success,” said Kalonga in a statement.
MEC will hold the by-elections in the following wards; Luchenza in Luchenza Municipal Council, Zomba Centra in Zomba City Council, Msikisi in Mangochi Town Council, Chibanja in Mzuzu City Council and Khwawa in Karonga District Council fell vacant after the death of counselors.
Meanwhile the body as proposed a budget of K400 million to government for the by-elections.
