A former Malawi Defense Force (MDF) officer last week Friday was arrested for illegally being found in possession of a firearm which he was trying to sell with any authority.
Information gathered by FaceofMalawi through Lilongwe Police Spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula, indicate that the former MDF soldier who was identified as Mackson Sato, aged 30 of Chitawira Village, T/A Ntaja in Blantyre was arrested Friday at around 11:00am at Lilongwe Bus Depot following a tip-off from the general public that a man was selling a firearm in town.
“Our Criminal Investigation Department officers went on the ground to investigate the matter and they found Sato at the Bus Depot where upon search, they found him with a pistol and one bullet,” explained Dandaula.
Dandaula further revealed that upon questioning Sato could not produce any license for the firearm or give convincing reasons for his possessing it.
Police investigations further revealed that Sato once served in the Malawi Defence Force in a low rank and he was dismissed some time back.
Sato is currently sitting in police custody and is expected to appear before court soon to answer charges of being possession of prohibitive weapon without authorization which is contrary to Firearms Act.
