Kasungu Magistrate Court has convicted a 40 yr old village head to 78 months (6 years and 6 months) imprisonment with hard labour for allegedly defiling a 13 yr old imbecile of Kayesa village,Traditional Authority Lukwa in the district.
Kasungu Public Relations Officer Edwin Kaunda said, on December 25, 2014 the suspect Jevason Kanjinga was reported to have taken the girl without the parent’s knowledge.
Kaunda said at around 14:00hrs the same day some people heard a sound of a girl crying inside the Christ of Church building which is at Kayesa Trading centre. Immediately some concerned people rushed to check what was happening.
And when the people got inside the church, they were shocked to see the convict busy defiling the girl without noticing the presence of the onlookers.
The people then immediately pounced on the man and arrested him and took him together with girl to her parents where they later went to Kasungu Police Station.
The girl was later referred to Kasungu District Hospital for medical examination and results showed that the girl had been defiled.
Kanjinga appeared before Kasungu First Grade Magistrates Court where he pleaded not guilty to the charge but the state prosecutor Assistant Superintendent Alphas Banda paraded three witnesses.
After full trial, his worship Damiano Banda found him guilty and was therefore convicted and sentenced.
In a related development, another 51 year old village head in the same district is in police custody for allegedly defiling a 13 year old girl of Mbilikira village in the area of Traditional Authority Njombwa.
The suspect, Laston Nkhoma is said to have met the girl at one of the bushy places and ordered her to stop.
It is reported that he later pushed the girl into the bush and defiled her. The girl immediately went home and reported the issue to her parents where her parents reported the matter to Bua Police Unit.
There they were referred to Bua Health Centre and medical examination showed that she was really defiled.
Nkhoma was arrested two days later and appeared before court where he pleaded not guilty.
The suspect who hails from Mbilikira village, Traditional Authority Njombwa in Kasungu will soon appear in court to hear his fate.
