Eighteen-year-old man was arrested by Police in Lilongwe after he, identifying himself as Vice President, Saulos Chilima, called the police station’s senior officers ordering them to release a certain suspect.
Kanengo Police spokesperson, Esther Mkwanda, identified the man as Fredrick Chiwere, of Chiwere Village T/A Chiwere, Dowa, and she said the man was arrested on Wednesday.
Mkwanda said Kanengo Police had earlier in the week arrested one, Munde Chiwere, for receiving five truck tyres that were stolen from a transporting company in Area 28, Kanengo.
She said later in the day, the Officer In-Charge (OC) of Kanengo got a strange call and the caller identified himself as the Vice President, Saulos Chilima, and he demanded immediate release of Munde Chiwere or risk getting fired.
“The OC was at a funeral so he told the caller to call the station officer and when the caller did, he threatened that he was the Vice President and that Munde Chiwere was his uncle,” Mkwanda said.
“The caller said if the suspect was not released immediately, the Station Officer would be fired. He even asked authoritatively, ‘how many years have you served in police service?’ Do you know I can fire you right now?”
The Police followed the matter with the Veep’s office and after further investigations the call was traced to Fredrick Chiwere, son to Munde Chiwere.
Fredrick is answering charges of giving false information to a person employed by public service contrary to Section 122 of the Penal Code.mana.
