The Lilongwe Magistrate Court has referred the corruption case against former army Commander General Henry Odillo and his deputy Lieutenant General Clement Kafuwa to the High Court.
Magistrate Paul Chiotcha referred the matter to the upper court this morning when the two appeared for formal charging.
The two were arrested on Monday on suspicion that they authorized payments to Thuso investments without supplying services to the Malawi Army.
According to the Anti Corruption Bureau, about two billion Kwacha of taxpayers’ money was swindled in this way.
Commenting on the arrest, ACB Public Relations Officer Egritta Ndala said the two are likely to face three counts; abuse of public office contrary to Section 25(b)(1) of the Corrupt Practices Act; negligence by public officer in preserving money or any other property contrary to Section 284(1) of the Penal Code; and, money laundering contrary to Section(1)(d) of the Money Laundering, Proceeds of Serious Crimes and Terrorist Financing Act.
Meanwhile the two are yet to be granted bail.
