Police in Blantyre on Monday arrested a National Bank of Malawi (NBM) employee Edington Umwima for allegedly stealing K136 million.
Information reaching FaceofMalawi through Blantyre Police spokesperson Elizabeth Divala said the 31-year-old Umwima was working in the Accounts Department at the bank and allegedly used to write cheques in another person’s name to cash them later.
“He did this for sometime but fled to Kachulu near Lake Chirwa in Zomba where he had been in hiding since January after noting that his employers had noted something,” she explained.
Divala said after National Bank noticed that Umwima was missing, they advertised in the local media, promising to offer a reward of K1 million to anyone who would help in the suspect’s arrest.
“Someone saw the advert and told Umwima that he would help to get him traditional medicine so that he should never be arrested by the police. He told the suspect that for him to prove that the medicine is working, they should both go to Fiscal Police offices for the police to forget about his case,” she explained.
When they reached the offices at 7am on Monday, Umwima was arrested.
Divala, however, said the police will investigate further to establish when he started stealing from the bank.
Umwima hails from Nangwale Village, Traditional Authority Mwambo in Zomba.
