Dedza Police have launched a manhunt for eleven suspects who on Tuesday allegedly set ablaze twelve houses of people accused of practicing witchcraft at Mayani in the district.
Confirming of the development with FaceofMalawi, Mayani Officer-in-Charge Assistant Superintendent Macdonald Mulima, said that the incident started when a certain girl died suddenly in the area on Monday a development that raised suspicion among villagers.
Mulima said,a group of men organized themselves Tuesday and started attacking people suspected of witchcraft in the area.
“Twelve houses of people suspected of witchcraft have been set on fire.
“The victims flee their homes during the attack and they did not sustain injuries,” said Mulima.
The OC further said, the victims have been rendered homeless and their properties have been burnt to ashes.
Meanwhile, police are hunting for eleven men suspected to have attacked the victims.
The names of eleven suspects from Group Village Headman Ntemwende are willard, Jamson, Chikondi, Matchaya, Alickangel, Masiye, Afana, Wilson, Winston, Lebiyasi and Namasowa.
