Police in Lilongwe have arrested five people suspected to have been involved in a series of robberies in the Central and Eastern Regions.
Lilongwe Police Publicist, Kingsley Dandaula confirmed the development to Malawi News Agency (Mana) saying all the suspects were arrested on the night of May 28, 2015 in their residential homes following a tip.
“The five are suspected to have been involved in most robberies in the Central and Eastern Regions where they store various items in Chipiku stores, explained Dandaula, adding; “They also store money about MK4 million at Area 23 Puma Filling Station which were meant for salaries.”
He also further disclosed that the suspects were involved in a murder case in Kasungu.
It is also revealed that the suspects used some of the money realised from the sales of the stolen items to buy a motorbike which the police have also recovered.
Among recovered items are cell phones, phone chargers, bicycle tubes and some groceries and some of the cell phones have been identified by owners according to Dandaula.
Dandaula explained that with the arrest of the suspects there is belief that cases of robbery will decrease in Central and Eastern Region.
Among others, the suspects robbed Sharp Valley, Mitundu, Dwangwa, Kapiri, Mangochi and Machinga Chipiku stores, Area 23 Puma Filling Station in Lilongwe and Kasungu Filling Station.
Police has since advised Chipiku stores managers to add security officers to avoid more cases of robbery, adding that most of the robbed Chipiku stores were in rural areas where security was not tight.
The five have been identified as Markon Gift Mwanyale, 28years from Chizizira Village, (V/G) Traditional Authority (T/A) Nthiramanja, Mulanje District, Patric Swaleyi, 35 years from Makuta V/G, T/A Malengachazi, Nkhotakota, Alex Banda, 28 years from Chisenga V/G, Salima District, Chrispline Manyozo (Chule), 40 years from Kadwala V/G, T/A Ganya, Ntcheu District and Henny Hende Tchinga, 40 years, from Chapola v/g, T/A Chikowi, Zomba District.mana
