CEAR TO IMPROVE SERVICE DELIVERY

Central East African Railways (Cear) says it will soon embark on an expansion drive to increase the number of its passenger coaches as part of efforts to improve service delivery.

And one of the routes earmarked to benefit is Limbe- Nayuchi, destinations where Cear says demand for train services has steadily increased over the past year.

The company’s Public Relations Manager, Chisomo Mwamadi, said this after the general public complained of traveling difficulties due to inadequate train services linking the two destinations.

“Late last year, we introduced a second passenger train between Limbe and Nayuchi which passes through Balaka and Liwonde to meet the demand from people that rely on railway transport in that section but still we faced challenges because people are complaining that the coaches are still not enough as other people are left out at the stations.” said Mwamadi.

Initially, passenger coaches were going to Nayuchi once every Wednesday but the challenge remained that it took a long time in transit as it waited for people to board and load their luggage.

And in response to the complaints Mwamadi says Cear plans to increase its fleet of coaches before January 20.

“We will increase the number of coaches from three to six or more depending on demand on that particular day so that we increase the sitting capacity to serve the people better,” he said.
