Malawi’s first ever female minister Rose Lomathinda Chibambo has passed on at Mwaiwathu hospital early this morning.
Mrs. Chibambo succumbed to a heart attack and hospital sources say she died at the age of 86.
Rose Chibambo is well-known for her heroism in the struggle for independence. She was imprisoned by the British and later gave birth whilst in jail.
During the Cabinet Crisis in 1964, as the first female cabinet minister Chibambo rebelled against the late Kamuzu Banda. She was exiled in Zambia for 30 years.
Chibambo hails from Kafukule Village in Mzimba district, northern region of Malawi.
She was hospitalized a few days ago till this morning.
Funeral details are yet to be announced by her family.
Rose Chibambo is a familiar face as she is on the K200 bank note.
