CHINESE-OWNED GOLDEN PEACOCK HOTEL WORKERS ON STRIKE

Malawian workers at a Chinese-owned Golden Peacock Hotel, in Lilongwe, on Friday staged a sit to force management to address what they called concerns over work conditions.

The workers cited poor salaries, failure by management to handle social welfare issue and the composition of the management team which they say is dominated by Chinese nationals as some of their concerns.

Police had been called in to help pacify the situation and provide extra security as the workers awaited management response to their grievances.

Golden Peacock assistant marketing manager Malumbo Kondowe confirmed of the strike in an interview with the press.

He said the staffs have on several times engaged the management into talks but all their effort has proved futile.

Kondowe who looked so angry at the time of the interview said workers are abused at the hotel as some of them receive as little as MK7, 000 per month.

Effort to talk to the management proved futile as no one was available for comment.

Golden Peacock Hotel has 247 rooms
