DRAMA IN WHATSAPP COUP PLOT: KACHALE NOT AWARE OF THE ARRESTS

Drama surround the recent arrests of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) top officials on treason charges over the alleged leaked WhatsApp conversation purportedly aimed at overthrowing President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.

Police arrested three MCP officials namely Jessie Kabwila, Ulemu Msungama and Peter Lewis Chankhwantha for allegedly being behind the coup plot
According to Information at hand, the State Prosecutor, Director of Public Prosecution Mary Kachale is not aware of the arrest and she did not sanction the arrests.

Under normal circumstances arrests for treason ought to be sanctioned by the DPP who is currently outside the country on national duty.
Kachale is said to be in Switzerland.

Meanwhile Police have said they will issue charges on three after getting instruction from the State prosecutor Mary Kachale.

Inspector General of Police Lexten Kachama disclosed this in a media briefing held at the Police Headquarters this morning aimed at clarifying some of the legal issues rocking the case as other scholars are arguing that evidence used to arrests the three are not enough.

In his speech, Kachama said the conversations on the social media are part of the Police investigations, saying once the investigations is over the case will be presented to Kachale for formal charging.

Kabwila, Msungama and Chakhwantha are currently on police bail and they are expected to appear in court on Friday.
