MALAWI CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY IN MANGOCHI CLOSED: VILLAGER KILLED IN FRACAS

DMI-St. John the Baptist University, a catholic university runs by the Sisters of Daughters of Mary Immaculate, Mangochi Campus has been closed indefinitely to allow for tension to calm down following the death of the villager on Sunday.

According to information at hand, the students from the school invaded the surrounding village to search for man suspected to have stolen a laptop computer.

Mangochi Police spokesperson Elijah Kachikuwo confirmed the university has been closed for two weeks, while the suspect has been arrested.

Kachikuwo said a man died of BP after seeing his heavily pregnant wife being beaten for a laptop stolen from a student.

The development did not please the villagers who retaliated by invading the school to seek for revenge.

Police and Malawi Defence Force soldiers failed to contain the people and advised the institution to close.

The law enforcers were seen at the school throughout the night guarding the school.

St. John the Baptist University in Mangochi was established in 2010 under the supervision of the Catholic Development Commission of Malawi-education division.
