Chilima asks CEOs not to sideline PROs

Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima Tuesday appealed to Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of different parastatals and senior government officials not to sideline Public Relations Officers (PROs) in doing their work.

Speaking during the official opening of a two-day reform champions and PROs orientation workshop in Lilongwe, Chilima said his office has been receiving reports that some CEOs are sidelining their PROs, a development he referred to as unhealthy.

Chilima said; “Give the PROs space to do what they were trained for. Work harmoniously to achieve the good job.”

The Vice President further said Public Relations Officers are capable people who can do their job better.

He however cautioned them not to be overzealous in doing their job in their respective organizations.

“I urge you to share both good and bad news about reforms, get feedback and collect any mistakes. If the news is dangerous, consult within the organization before saying it out,” he urged.

Dr Chilima also asked the CEOs and PROs to establish a good relationship and share the information within the organization and the media.

He then urged these PROs to join hands in converting people especially those that have not yet embraced the reforms.

“Once a person believes in a particular reform, he or she must support it and get as much information as possible and be able to back it up.

Public Service Reform Chief Director, Nwanzi Mnthambala said the orientation workshop would help participants to know how reforms are being implemented and the benefits they are to bring to the country.

Princilla Mateyu, Blantyre Water Board (BWB) PRO who participated in the workshop said the orientation would help them to effectively carry the message across the board and the entire Blantyre City.

She said the coming in of reforms has improved efficiency and effectiveness as they have linked determination that has saved non-revenue water.
