PAC to meet Mutharika today over his resistance to have his powers trimmed

Public Affairs Committee (PAC) is today scheduled to meet President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika at Kamuzu Palace in the Capital Lilongwe to discuss a number of issues one of it being the trimming of Presidential powers.

The meeting was expected to be held last month March 29 2016 but Mutharika called off the meeting at the 11th hour, saying he was too busy.

PAC chairperson Father Peter Mulomole has confirmed of the meeting in an interview with the press.

According to Mulomole, PAC will present a report to Mutharika on the resolutions made at a February meeting held at Mount Soche Hotel in the commercial capital Blantyre where Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and opposition People’s Party (PP) representative called for Mutharika’s resignation in 90 days.

While not disclosing the resolutions made by PAC, Mulomole said the body is happy that Mutharika has started working on short term resolutions that delegates at the conference proposed.

When asked as to whether the meeting will look on the proposed trimming of Presidential powers, Mulomole could not deny or confirm of the issue being part of the agenda.

But Mutharika is on record saying he was set to veto any bill aimed at reducing his presidential powers.

There have been concerns that the President has excess powers that include the appointment of statutory corporations that include of tax payers funded Malawi Broadcasting Corporation that has now compromised its public broadcaster status as it is more of the ruling party propaganda machine than a public broadcaster.
