Two people killed in road accident in Salima: four others seriously injured

Two people died on spot and four others sustained serious injuries Wednesday morning after a lorry missed a T-Junction and plunged into pedestrians at Salima Turn-off in Kanengo, Lilongwe.

Kanengo Police confirmed the accident and described it as one of the worst accidents in its policing areas so far this year.

The accident occurred at around 5:30am when a lorry of Hyundai make, Registration No. BL 6503, from the direction of Salima developed fault in its braking system just as it approached the T-Junction into the M1 Road.

The speeding lorry which was carrying bags of charcoal went straight across the M1 Road onto the other side knocking down unsuspecting pedestrians who were walking about.

The lorry also had six people on board and it was destined for Area 25, according to Kanengo Police Spokesperson, Sub. Insp. Esther Mkwanda.

The Police identified one of the deceased as Mrs. Felia Nkhoma, 44, from Mgona location but she hailed from Chalonda Village, Traditional Authority Nsabwe, Thyolo; and a man yet to be identified.

“The four who were severely injured included the driver, Felix Banda, and three more pedestrians, while none of the six passengers on board were seriously injured,” explained Mkwanda.

The four were admitted to Kamuzu Central Hospital, where they were receiving treatment as we went to press on Thursday.mana
